Networks in Crisis

Summary:
This is a team project by Ziheng Qu, Ying Han, Yin Liu and me.
It is great to work in a team. Each of us cooperated well and performed together. And when we tried to think together, it is more inspiration than thinking alone. We met twice a week in average to meet, share ideas and discuss what should be done next time(to-do lists). We used a share sketchbook while I was the one who organized and put everything on.

Timeline
enable think/imagine widely and let thinking flows; know historical events and help to imagine what future is like; link before and after technology together to see what can be combined and make anew; adopt existing technology with future usages

Look the Timeline from before modern technology history to the future. Separate the paper into two categories (above-technology invented/below-events) with a middle line with dates on. Forecast what would the future be using methods as back casting, fore/back projection.

Trend Ideas for Future
For the categories of my book in 2020, the following lists should not be missed (listed in no particular order).
1. Six Senses
Compare to the formal five senses: see, touch, smell, talk, hear, what is the mysterious 6th sense? Is that predictable? Can technology take advantage of that? Like a wizard or a fortune teller?
2. Sexual Robots
We already have different kinds of robots to help maintain our life. What about sexual needs? Maybe a sexual robot could be a better solution than a prostitute.
3. Hyperspace
Still remember star gate series? The womb enables people to travel between planets in a very short time while you only need to have power and dial the location codes.
4. Time Efficiency
Make use of your 24 hrs-A time machine allows you to go back like the device in Harry Potter movies.
5. Technology within Human Body
Inserts, drugs, medicines...there are all kinds of ways to help people survive. However, we always dream of vampire who can live forever, or maybe a longer life. Try nanorobots within your body. They can produce organs and recover really fast.
6. Psychological Mind Exchange
Would like to know what tiger woods’ feels when his secrets exposed? This device can also be used in medical field as a tool to help patients recover.
7. Virtual Reality
Still use a plane to meet your friends, or maybe a Skype? The virtual reality machine enables you not only see them but also touch.

Technology in 2020-From physical to psychological
Keywords: psychological disease, technology, 2020, mind exchange, pensieve

The normal treatment for psychological disease nowadays has mainly two ways. One is the usage of drugs helping to control emotional problems and calm down. The other uses an inter-personal way like resorting to friends and relatives for help. Both ways need to be taken at the same time while the result will not easily shown but gradually turn up. And it is also possible when the disease come up again and again after recovery.
By 2020, the cure of such disease will employ a new technology that is developed into unphysical way, based on patients’ mind and the psychological aspect. People with mental stresses will expect no traditional way of treatment (taking drugs, building family tie, being sociable) but a totally innovative memory exchange devices (Like “pensieve” in Harry Potter novels). It can connect each other’s mind and works on the basis of daydreams and virtual reality to help define the problem and restore confidence and recover. Even people who don’t suffer from those mental diseases can benefit from the experience other’s mind/ memory in order to understand each other and able to help. Even one can experience other people’s daydream (illusions, fantasies). There are also museums exhibiting famous people’s mind, which gives people another view of those talents. Imagine experiencing what Obama would think!

Reading

Brainstorm-define
work in a group helps thinking to be wider and cover more areas

On 1st workshop, our group brainstormed and explored ‘crises’ in particular scenarios and contexts, from everyday minor crisis to major crisis during which we thought of fast food crisis and interpersonal relationship crisis.

Preconception Mapping
no research background; allow think randomly; clarify ideas and make progress

During 2nd workshop, we began to do mapping using surface as products, services, agents, software that facilitate these emerging networks. We got two ideas on fast food crisis and relationship crisis. Then we outlined what we think may rise the crises and things relevant. Afterwards, the idea ‘fast sex’ came to us, which led to the following main theme on one night stand.

Preconception Drawing

After mapping, I draw a drawing which shows my understanding of the environment of ONS.
Evaluation: put words into images; using visualizing seeing if some points are missing before research starts; rethink the incidents

Definition

Before we though of alleviate one night stand, we need to know what is ONS so We began to search online of the definition.

Originally, a one-night stand referred to a single night theatre performance, usually by a guest group on tour. Today, however, the term is more commonly understood as a single sexual encounter between individuals, where neither individual has any immediate intention or expectation of establishing a long-term sexual or romantic relationship.

Research

We did research on one night stand related topic in order to cover more areas.

Logo & Ads
using images to say something instead of words, more striking, convincing and easily communicated

One night stand is a crisis to be aware of thus we made a Logo using hazard tape as a main element.

I also made an Ad for one night stand. Using the same element as our logo which coincidentally responds with the hacienda event, this ad shows directly what is an ONS.

Ethnography Research
give a quick and general introduction on people’s possible responses; help to know the ONS better; compare internal users’ idea VS external who are outsiders to see ONS in a overall angle.

We researched people’s Feedback Online about how they would think about ONS and their emotional impacts afterward. We mainly used Durex Sex Report and other online sources.

Questions
using questions to let real people to tell their opinions out, and generate the data afterward

Since none of us had ONS before, we thought it would be better if we could get public’s feedback on ONS. Thus we made a survey list and asked people to fill them out on their responses to ONS. The content of survey list is based on the online feedback.

Interview-Creative Profiling
detailed interview, expose hidden facts

We got some of our friends (some did before, and some never) to Interviewed about their ideas of ONS if we missed some important points.

Interviewee Details:
Male, Gay, 25-30, single
Female, Straight, 25-30, in a relationship
Male, Straight, 25-30, single
Male, Straight, middle aged, married
Female, Straight, 20-25, single

Storyboard
storyboard makes a whole story and is easily understood

After the survey questions, we knew that two main resource of one night stand is either Online or inside a Pub. So we did two Storyboards on how people get in touch before one night stand.

pub

net

we also registered on a website to experience online search for ONS.

Data Mapping
aesthetic values as well as shows a variety of information

We did a data mapping of sex transmitted diseases (STD).

Also we mapped the locations of London pubs where one night stand easily happens.

Simulation
Also we found a bedroom model and we shoot a simulation for ONS leftovers.

Possible Effects Mapping
fully understand what are the impacts of ONS and never miss a single point

After questions, online feedback and interviews, we made a Possible Effects Mapping, showing all possible one night stand results we have researched out.

Testing Model
make adjustment and let the final model be perfect

In order to make sure the final model won’t go wrong, we made a small scale Testing Model, using colored elastic lines and pins.

Outcome

Filter Glass
how filter works:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter#Optics_and_photography

2d model

3d model

Real Person & Location Simulation
Spotted-ONS, easily communicated and funny

Pub Practice

Reflection
3d model can attract more attention in a pub however it is hard to carry and requires a space to stall while 2d model would be more influential since it can be easily stood near condom dispenser with filter glasses so people can take a look before they do a ONS.
