Miscellaneous

Design Brief
good way to explore what interests you and what do you want to change and design out

After understanding the brief and some reading/research, it’s time to establish your own brief, more specific and detailed.

Literature Reading
a good pathway to understand a theme in details

a method accompanying the whole design process. One reads books on the field which he is interested in and finds details which he may neglect or ignored and thus help generated the design idea better.

Ideation Drawing
brings out imaginative possibilities and helps to think wilder which opens up the way of not only drawing but also mind

my dream place: my personal car park where I have all labels cars and a helicopter, a fountain as well

Environmental Behavior
analyze/detect the beneath truth after collecting evidences by looking at physical environments/traces. However, you need to be quick since traces are sometimes easy to be removed

Public Message
Along the corridors of RHB, many posters can be observed while in other locations there is less. There are official files like the time schedule for lectures as well as ads like housemate wanted/exchange/new activities flyers. These places are supposed to display information. And you can also get an answer that more people would take this path.

Displays of self:
In toilets, either in RHB or library, you can see all kinds of tattoo. Some drawings are really interesting. People use the toilets wall as a place to share their ideas (though it is not good for the facilities).I don't know if it is because they can do it more easily in toilets since no one will see and judge or even fine. But in library ground floor there are more tattoos than in the upper floor. Maybe more people use toilets in ground floor?

Adaptation for use:
You can see from this photo on the left side, there is a dog thinking of climbing the ladder to reach the window, also the paper with the human face and girl with mouth biting something. It’s quite nice to see the drawer combine the props along with her art work.

Obeservation
useful if one wants to collect data of people’s behavior and its relationship to the environment; reorganize ideas; I also used this method in the TAZ and Space of Production project.

I observed neat the RHB café and tried to draw people’s path after they get refreshments and the proportions of amount of people going to bookshop compared to café. I used cups to present people having coffee/tea and circles as pass by.

Bodystorming
Storytelling like a movie preview. used in a group condition where more imagination happen and errors can be easily found out and fixed. Give the user a general idea and be more excited to explore the narratives. Imagining what it would be like if the product (design) existed, and act as though it exists, ideally in the place it would be used, the method helps to evaluate the design and to adjust and explore future usages.

In this session, we stand in a line according to height and then form a group of six people. Then we designed a fictional film scripts. Afterward, we outlined the story and picked one pivot scene(5 mins) from the movie and played it out. Our movie is a traditional American story with family, murders, affairs and psychological people. This method is called Body Storming, similar to brainstorming but with physical actions.

Cultural Probe
working as a group to know better ways of present things and inspired by each other. I also used the sound recording method in Space of Production project.

In Cultural Probe-living room & activities, four people work in a group to think of present the living room and the activities inside it. Layout designs using logos, stickers to indentify favorite places, events photos, color choose, sound recording, I have this table.

Reservoir
poetic research method can be come from ‘hunch’ searching while conventional method focuses on research, more scientific based. Helps knowledge on the differences of scientists and designers’ ways of exploring and helps to understand design process better

We are asked to detail: What is hunch? Hunch is a intuition getting out of a sudden while afterwards more are still needed to be explored in a more search way.

Dynamic Description
help to know different ways of doing a thing and how one’s preconception could lead into a wrong way.

In Dynamic Description, two people work in a pair: one people acts while the other draws what he is doing.

Objects in Performance
an accident way of generating the relationships of two objects. When putting together, the normal view can be challenged. When idea stuck, this way can bring out former things new life. It is not a overall thinking like the thinking things model while all aspects are viewed and made connections but it is still an interesting way to see things.

This installation Objects in Performance reinterprets the ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ in a contemporary vein, exchanging the scientific taxonomy of museum displays for a theatrical staging of the objects, offering us an alternative basis for their interpretation and appreciation. I put the indigenous below seeing the totem with his hands hanging around his head. For the indigenous: What he is doing now? Is he doing a religious activity during a ceremony? Or is the man a bad guy since totem feels very shining that he feels himself guilty? For totem: Is the guy just a god over viewing the commons? Or the god smile wickedly showing no mercy of the lives of commons?

Site Exploration
helps people explore the chosen place. It is always more alluring when you give people little hints and set a task to fulfill than to explain the details by yourself. It’s like the objective studying VS passive studying. While people have more fun and achievements when they find the answers themselves and think they are the one who know most.

Cuttlefish Modeling
a whole new way of modeling techniques. Interesting and easily approachable

In Martin’s lectured, we leaned a new way of modeling, usually used for jewelry, the Cuttlefish Modeling.

Thinking Things
It is a process model which helps one to identify ideas clearly and think about the relationships when ideas stuck. The top label, here ethic, can be replaced by anything that one thinks to be top important. One can makes own thinking things model according to different design objects.

Thinking Things is a 3d model which has different aspects as time, space, people, ethic, etc. Link the string between two specific items, e.g. material and time. Then one draws and acts thing in sketch to explore potentials.

Condom Kingdom (Materiality Optional MAD&E)

The brief is to manage a 5-min film and 5min presentation including the materiality and the future prospects of a chosen object. I chose condom as my object.

Storycube
opens up a new angle, as brainstorm, but in a more interesting and imaginary way.

Everyone draws/writes what he thinks of politics on 6 faces of a cube. Then throw many cubes (in a group) at the same time, and try to link all the faces to generate into a whole story.
For me, the 1st time I thought of 'politics', I was thinking things about economy, political parties, election, military etc. While after seeing the book ' the politics of bottled water'(reading for MAD&E materiality), I began to understand that politics can be within every objects. It likes the relationship between 'materiality' and 'material', while the latter occupy only a small proportions of the earlier. Help to rethink what is the politics of condom

Storyboard
see very clearly of condom life circle. It could be used to tell the process of manufacture and life cycle

A life of a brand condom Storyboard details how a condom comes from latex, being manufactured, sold, used, and then discarded.

Timeline
know history background why people’s ideas differ on condoms and adapt former technology into future new functions

The Timeline of condom is also made in the film about how it evolves from traditional animal bladders to modern latex and how people's understanding changed through history within ethic fields.

Display - Board & Newspaper

I thought of the economic aspects (tax, costs and prices), the branding strategy (the main reason of over consuming and adding values), its role on education, environment influence, religious opposition, the healthy protection on STD and the social perceptions etc. Using News Board to include the major aspects literally and the most important aspects to be detailed Newspaper.

Cartoon & Logo
to avoid embarrassment and present in a funny and easy way. Cartoon character usually allures people in a interesting and harmony way.

We all know about the famous ads of Durex while 3 rabbits doing safe sex.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5sTBrs4fhQ
However, this ad is banned due to potential negative sexual influences. Two Cartoon broadcasters were designed in the 5-min film. We also designed a logo for our broadcast to be condom kingdom.

Interview
direct and fast way to get 1st hand information; help analyze action, behavior and cultural

We also interviewed some people on their responses to condom usages so that we can tell what condoms mean to different ethnic groups. It covers internal perspective and external perspective. For condom kingdom, people who never used a condom can be viewed as an external user.

Reflection
After the project, I came to rethink about what is the materiality of condom and how would be the future of condom would be? Will it be a technology innovation like a spray condom or people are kind of finding better places to store them, especially like put it inside a belt on 1st date?

Comments
group film: strong visual design and format; good interviews; would benefit from more conceptual analysis or discussed.
individual essay: descriptive and factual rather than analytical;improve by focusing on one core idea in depth; be careful to integrate citations properly

Networks in Crisis

Summary:
This is a team project by Ziheng Qu, Ying Han, Yin Liu and me.
It is great to work in a team. Each of us cooperated well and performed together. And when we tried to think together, it is more inspiration than thinking alone. We met twice a week in average to meet, share ideas and discuss what should be done next time(to-do lists). We used a share sketchbook while I was the one who organized and put everything on.

Timeline
enable think/imagine widely and let thinking flows; know historical events and help to imagine what future is like; link before and after technology together to see what can be combined and make anew; adopt existing technology with future usages

Look the Timeline from before modern technology history to the future. Separate the paper into two categories (above-technology invented/below-events) with a middle line with dates on. Forecast what would the future be using methods as back casting, fore/back projection.

Trend Ideas for Future
For the categories of my book in 2020, the following lists should not be missed (listed in no particular order).
1. Six Senses
Compare to the formal five senses: see, touch, smell, talk, hear, what is the mysterious 6th sense? Is that predictable? Can technology take advantage of that? Like a wizard or a fortune teller?
2. Sexual Robots
We already have different kinds of robots to help maintain our life. What about sexual needs? Maybe a sexual robot could be a better solution than a prostitute.
3. Hyperspace
Still remember star gate series? The womb enables people to travel between planets in a very short time while you only need to have power and dial the location codes.
4. Time Efficiency
Make use of your 24 hrs-A time machine allows you to go back like the device in Harry Potter movies.
5. Technology within Human Body
Inserts, drugs, medicines...there are all kinds of ways to help people survive. However, we always dream of vampire who can live forever, or maybe a longer life. Try nanorobots within your body. They can produce organs and recover really fast.
6. Psychological Mind Exchange
Would like to know what tiger woods’ feels when his secrets exposed? This device can also be used in medical field as a tool to help patients recover.
7. Virtual Reality
Still use a plane to meet your friends, or maybe a Skype? The virtual reality machine enables you not only see them but also touch.

Technology in 2020-From physical to psychological
Keywords: psychological disease, technology, 2020, mind exchange, pensieve

The normal treatment for psychological disease nowadays has mainly two ways. One is the usage of drugs helping to control emotional problems and calm down. The other uses an inter-personal way like resorting to friends and relatives for help. Both ways need to be taken at the same time while the result will not easily shown but gradually turn up. And it is also possible when the disease come up again and again after recovery.
By 2020, the cure of such disease will employ a new technology that is developed into unphysical way, based on patients’ mind and the psychological aspect. People with mental stresses will expect no traditional way of treatment (taking drugs, building family tie, being sociable) but a totally innovative memory exchange devices (Like “pensieve” in Harry Potter novels). It can connect each other’s mind and works on the basis of daydreams and virtual reality to help define the problem and restore confidence and recover. Even people who don’t suffer from those mental diseases can benefit from the experience other’s mind/ memory in order to understand each other and able to help. Even one can experience other people’s daydream (illusions, fantasies). There are also museums exhibiting famous people’s mind, which gives people another view of those talents. Imagine experiencing what Obama would think!

Reading

Brainstorm-define
work in a group helps thinking to be wider and cover more areas

On 1st workshop, our group brainstormed and explored ‘crises’ in particular scenarios and contexts, from everyday minor crisis to major crisis during which we thought of fast food crisis and interpersonal relationship crisis.

Preconception Mapping
no research background; allow think randomly; clarify ideas and make progress

During 2nd workshop, we began to do mapping using surface as products, services, agents, software that facilitate these emerging networks. We got two ideas on fast food crisis and relationship crisis. Then we outlined what we think may rise the crises and things relevant. Afterwards, the idea ‘fast sex’ came to us, which led to the following main theme on one night stand.

Preconception Drawing

After mapping, I draw a drawing which shows my understanding of the environment of ONS.
Evaluation: put words into images; using visualizing seeing if some points are missing before research starts; rethink the incidents

Definition

Before we though of alleviate one night stand, we need to know what is ONS so We began to search online of the definition.

Originally, a one-night stand referred to a single night theatre performance, usually by a guest group on tour. Today, however, the term is more commonly understood as a single sexual encounter between individuals, where neither individual has any immediate intention or expectation of establishing a long-term sexual or romantic relationship.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-night_stand

Research

We did research on one night stand related topic in order to cover more areas.

Logo & Ads
using images to say something instead of words, more striking, convincing and easily communicated

One night stand is a crisis to be aware of thus we made a Logo using hazard tape as a main element.

I also made an Ad for one night stand. Using the same element as our logo which coincidentally responds with the hacienda event, this ad shows directly what is an ONS.

Ethnography Research
give a quick and general introduction on people’s possible responses; help to know the ONS better; compare internal users’ idea VS external who are outsiders to see ONS in a overall angle.

We researched people’s Feedback Online about how they would think about ONS and their emotional impacts afterward. We mainly used Durex Sex Report and other online sources.

Questions
using questions to let real people to tell their opinions out, and generate the data afterward

Since none of us had ONS before, we thought it would be better if we could get public’s feedback on ONS. Thus we made a survey list and asked people to fill them out on their responses to ONS. The content of survey list is based on the online feedback.

Interview-Creative Profiling
detailed interview, expose hidden facts

We got some of our friends (some did before, and some never) to Interviewed about their ideas of ONS if we missed some important points.

Interviewee Details:
Male, Gay, 25-30, single
Female, Straight, 25-30, in a relationship
Male, Straight, 25-30, single
Male, Straight, middle aged, married
Female, Straight, 20-25, single

Storyboard
storyboard makes a whole story and is easily understood

After the survey questions, we knew that two main resource of one night stand is either Online or inside a Pub. So we did two Storyboards on how people get in touch before one night stand.

pub

net

we also registered on a website to experience online search for ONS.

Data Mapping
aesthetic values as well as shows a variety of information

We did a data mapping of sex transmitted diseases (STD).

Also we mapped the locations of London pubs where one night stand easily happens.

Simulation
Also we found a bedroom model and we shoot a simulation for ONS leftovers.

Possible Effects Mapping
fully understand what are the impacts of ONS and never miss a single point

After questions, online feedback and interviews, we made a Possible Effects Mapping, showing all possible one night stand results we have researched out.

Testing Model
make adjustment and let the final model be perfect

In order to make sure the final model won’t go wrong, we made a small scale Testing Model, using colored elastic lines and pins.

Outcome

Filter Glass
how filter works:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter#Optics_and_photography

2d model

3d model

Real Person & Location Simulation
Spotted-ONS, easily communicated and funny

Pub Practice

Reflection
3d model can attract more attention in a pub however it is hard to carry and requires a space to stall while 2d model would be more influential since it can be easily stood near condom dispenser with filter glasses so people can take a look before they do a ONS.
